A typical day in our classroom requires standard technology and practical organization. Many students are both auditory and visual learners, thus they must hear what they see and see what they hear as they learn and develop skills as 7th graders.
My students are young teenagers who are enthusiastic about learning as long as it is relevant and engaging.
I have found that the key to student motivation is technology and movement. At our school, we are going through a merger of two schools so technology, space, and materials are limited due to our numbers. Right now, we are all simply trying to adjust and keep progressing as best as possible. The laptop I'm using now is unreliable because it does not have a battery and must always be connected to an electric socket in order for it to stay powered on. This makes it hard to teach lessons and give my students the support they need. It is hard to keep them engaged when the laptop suddenly shuts off or reboots randomly. Moreover, it is very challenging to prepare lessons and communicate with students and parents via email without a reliable laptop. Finally, my students need an area they can collect and submit their work so that they are able to stay organized.
My Project
With a reliable, and even updated laptop, my students will feel confident knowing that our lessons and learning activities will continue without fail. Everyday, I will feel confident that they have been engaged and will not grow restless waiting for the laptop to reboot. As their teacher, I use the laptop daily to present visual representations of their notes, to show educational videos, to stream news and current events, to project important information and images related to various topics of study, and to communicate with them and/or their parents via email at any given moment. Needless to say, I will certainly use the laptop to write lesson plans, create innovative learning activities and access the current student information system. Finally, with a hanging pocket chart, we as a "class family" will be able to stay organized and up-to-date as we store and submit documents.
Donations to this project will stop the growing frustrations that I see on my students' faces because they're bored or restless waiting for the laptop to reboot and reload.
My students will know that I am literally prepared to give them the knowledge they are so hungry for. A hanging pocket chart will make it easy to access and submit important documents daily.
