My school is very diverse in that we have many English Language Learners which make up almost half the population of our school. Also, we are an all kindergarten school made up of approximately 500 5 and 6 year olds! That's a lot of little bodies that can be influenced in a positive way!
I teach thirty-six enthusiastic, eager, and energetic kindergartners at a Title I school.
Our school is in a very low socioeconomic community. Because we are in a high poverty community, all students at our school receive free breakfast and lunch through the community eligibility program. Most of my students have not had the opportunity to attend pre-k or have significant learning experiences in their homes.
My Project
We have literacy centers every day in our classroom. During this time I am pulling small groups of students working with them on literacy skills and teaching them how to read. While I am teaching my small groups, the other students in my classroom are working cooperatively on literacy skills. One center my students love is the reading center where they can sit and explore and discover through books. Right now, I have my students go back to their table to read and look at books.
I would absolutely love to create a comfortable reading nook where they can go each day and read.
