Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a wonderful group of 5th and 6th graders who are excited to come to school and learn. They always bring a smile to my face and I absolutely love learning with them.

My students come from a high poverty neighborhood so more than 75% of them receive free or reduced-price lunch at school.

There are a very diverse range of home structures: nuclear, single parent, multiple-family, foster, migrant, and military families, to name a few. Our students also come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, with a large portion being Hispanic, Punjabi and African American. Additionally, we have a large population of English Language Learners. With such diversity, it is to be expected that each student is going to have a very divergent range of personal, social, emotional, and educational needs when compared to schools that serve a more homogeneous population.

My Project

My students are in need of two iPads with good cases in order to code their robots. Currently, we have four iPad Minis, but since then we have received more robots through DonorsChoose projects. With a class of 31, the groups of four are rather large. Receiving two more iPads would make a huge impact and lower the group numbers so that more students get to use the iPads to code and create movies.

My students love to code their Dash and Sphero robots and have learned so much since we have started using them, but being able to have smaller groups would allow more of them a chance to be hands-on with the actual coding of the robot.

Coding has become an important role in our society with the way technology is in our everyday lives. Coding also helps students with their close reading as they look for details, errors, or success with the lines of code. It also includes a lot of math because students are constantly looking at the speed, distance, angles for a turn, and more while they code their robots. The apps for the Dash and Sphero robots are only available on tablets or phones, so, unfortunately, my students cannot use their laptops to code with.

We are requesting these special cases for the iPads because they have a handle on the back so that it makes it easier for students to carry around the room with less worry that the iPad could be accidentally dropped.
