My students need basic school supplies like dry-erase markers, clipboards, sheet protectors, and binders in order to become successful, organized mathematicians.
As a teacher in an extremely low-income/high poverty school, I watch my students really struggle with being prepared for class. They face tough circumstances outside of the classroom that can carry over to school. There are so many factors outside of their control that they have to deal with that school isn't the priority.
Many of the children in my classroom are known to be homeless or living in the projects, so the last thing on their minds is where their math notes are.
Through all of this, my students are talented, creative, and exceptional students. They persevere and don't give up when things get tough. They love to solve problems and are so proud of themselves when they finally understand a topic.
My Project
As a middle school teacher, part of my job is to teach my students how to take notes and be organized. The binders and page protectors will help my students learn to organize what they need in their math class. One of the main struggles that my students have is that they lose their notes, homework, or daily bellwork and have to restart. These binders that stay in the classroom will help to cut down on these losses.
In my classroom, the students rarely bring their own supplies so they rely on classroom sets.
The classroom supply caddies will be immensely beneficial for our time management. Students will no longer need to get up and wander around the room getting what they don't have. They will now be easily accessible to them from their seats. These caddies will be filled with supplies such as the red pens and dry erase markers that students need every day.
Additionally, my students' favorite activity in math is when we do "gallery walks" with problems posted around the room and in the hall. Right now it is hard for students to work efficiently because they are always having to write on the floor or walk to a desk because they don't have a hard surface to write on. The clipboards will change all of that!
