Let's Get a Library!

We are requesting two bean bag chairs and a large rug for independent reading stations.

My Students

"Don't judge a book by its cover." I'm sure we've all heard this saying, but how many times do you make decisions based on the appearance of something? Please help make my classroom library an attractive, inviting place for my students to spend time reading!

My students are in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades in New York.

They attend a high-poverty public middle school for students with special needs. Each of my students has a disability, including intellectual disabilities, autism, and emotional disturbances. They are a truly intelligent, thoughtful, and energetic bunch of adolescents that are eager for the opportunity to learn and succeed.

My Project

My students barely touched our classroom library last year. It's hard to blame them- the bookshelves were falling apart, the rug was old and dingy, and the books were messily falling off the flimsy bookshelves and onto the floor, lying in a disastrous pile. Seeing this mess eliminated any desire for my students to venture into the library and see all that the literature that these books could offer them. Let's fix this major problem! I was able to obtain new bookshelves and book bins from my school. All we really need now is a brand new carpet and bean bag chairs to make our classroom library corner the most exciting, inviting place for the children. Imagine having to stay seated all day long, without one opportunity to stretch out. The bean bag chairs will be especially important for my students that use wheelchairs, as it will provide them relief from the seated position. These students will be able to take a break from their wheelchairs during whole-class instruction.

Creating an eye-catching library will capture my students' attention and bring them into the wonderful world of reading.

The new carpet will allow my students to relax in a comfortable space during independent reading times. The bean bag chairs will provide additional comfort, and will also help my students that use wheelchairs to stretch and build muscle strength. Thank you for your consideration to our project!
