I teach 10 energetic, eager students with Autism. They are always on the move and need to have movement throughout their day to stay regulated and focused.
I am a special education teacher working in an urban, high-need community.
Our school is a Title I school where all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students have a wide range of abilities, many coming from homes where English is not spoken in their home. Some of my students are verbal and others use pictures to communicate and learn. Most of my students have sensory issues and have a hard time sitting and focusing.
We are lucky to have a large classroom with two meeting spots. We have a spot where we gather together for morning meeting and another one in front of our SmartBoard. Moving from space to space helps to give my students the movement they need. We spend a lot of time in our meeting spots including morning meeting, SmartBoard time, indoor recess, and sensory breaks! We even do yoga a few times a week! This will be my 5th year in this classroom and our carpets have definitely seen better days. One carpet is frayed and unraveling on one end and the other one has had too many stains and we had to get rid of it.
We would love a brand new carpet for the front of our classroom.
Here we gather for Smartboard, yoga, and indoor recess.
