Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My special education students are an energetic bunch that come to school every day with a smile despite the many challenges they face. The majority of them receive speech, occupational and physical therapy throughout the day. My class is filled with a diverse group of learners from students classified as autistic, other health impaired and speech and language impaired. As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district, my students are faced with both daily challenges in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges, they come to school excited to learn. Many of my students require additional sensory experiences and breaks to help them focus on learning.
My Project
My students need sensory toys to help them focus throughout the day. They need multi-sensory activities that will help them learn the alphabet as well as number recognition during our learning center time. My students will use these materials to help them learn how to identify numbers, letters as well as sounds, and then make words! The washable sensory play materials, translucent numbers and word building tiles will be utilized as a learning center. Students will use the easy grip safety tweezers to pick up the word building tiles and translucent numbers to matching number and alphabet cards. This will help them not only learn their alphabet and numbers, but will also strengthen their fine motor skills.
Many of my autistic students require sensory breaks throughout the day.
The sensory ball set, gel based sensory shapes and dough will help them take necessary breaks and self-regulate. In addition, the sensory seating will help my energetic students concentrate on lessons being taught while sitting on the carpet and they will also be utilized as flexible seating in the classroom for students that require a quiet space to work independently. The bouncy bands for students chairs will help those learners that need to move their body while working. This will greatly improve their ability to refocus on completing independent work while at their desk. Your generous donation to my project will improve my Special Education classroom by helping my diverse group of students focus on their academics and learn in a fun way!
