Our school is a PreK through eighth grade traditional school that offers various programs to support students' social and academic success. It is the first program to offer instruction in Mandarin Chinese. Students in grades PreK through eight receive Mandarin language instruction for thirty minutes each day. This coursework also increases students' global understanding of various Asian cultures and their influence on the global community. Our school also houses the International Newcomer Center (INC), a program that serves recently arrived middle school refugee students. In this program, students learn academic content while simultaneously acquiring the English language.
Each day, I start out with a hug, handshake or high-five from every one of my students, and greet them by their name, so they feel welcomed and valued as an individual and member of my class.
My students will break your heart with their life stories, yet bring a smile to your face and brighten your day. They are filled with a spirit like no other, despite any odds already against them, what they wear, or how they learn. Many come to school not only hungry for a good breakfast but also with a hunger for learning, stability and a structured day!
Most of my students do not have access to newspapers, internet, magazines or nonfiction books in their home. Scholastic News will take them beyond our classroom and their home, by giving them insight to the world around them.
Students can learn so much and stretch their imaginations through reading nonfiction.
A wide variety of vocabulary is introduced through Scholastic Magazine, which is vital to the reading and writing process. What is discovered by reading the Scholastic news, can be extended and applied to other learning opportunities within our classroom.
Having the class subscription to Let's Find Out Scholastic News, will bring the outside world to my students, who are always eager to find out more!
