My students are from a neighborhood with a high refugee population. As a result, they speak many different languages and have extremely diverse and unimaginable experiences. Many of them are picking up what it means to be in school and speak the English language.
It can be overwhelming and frustrating for my students to go from their home culture to the American elementary school culture and back every day.
Nonetheless, they are driven and committed, even as 5 and 6 year olds. They work hard, whether their parents are able to support them academically or not. They bring so much inspiration and sunshine into our school!
My Project
Scholastic's Let's Find Out magazines will be so useful in our classroom! We will be able to do a whole group reading, where we discuss the science or social studies concept for the week. Throughout the week afterward, we will be able to use these magazines as prompts to practice good discussion habits, do some extra research, and write as well.
I think these magazines are valuable because they show the true purpose of reading and writing: conveying information in an engaging way.
As young readers, reading is a grueling task; they're still in the practice stages. Anything that can get my students learning about something exciting, special, and relatable will help them appreciate reading and make them more curious, which is my goal as a Kindergarten teacher.
