Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a classroom of energized, excited young learners with limited school experience. Our school has 62% of students who are English Language Learners and it is Title I. Presently 80% of the students in my school are in poverty. Very few of my students attended school before my classroom, and they are hungry for knowledge and hands on experiences!
My students are new readers, and are eager to learn all they can!
They love to spend time engaged in meaningful dramatic play and always have new questions and subjects to explore. I am so lucky to spend my days coming up with new ways to make this first year of their school experience amazing.
Of course, kindergarten while social distancing provides new challenges that I look forward to embracing.
My Project
This project includes an annual subscription to Scholastic’s Let’s Find Out magazine for each one of my kindergarten students. With four issues a month, the hard copies of this magazine will allow all of my students to have engaging materials written exactly at their reading level to enjoy at home! Through the supplementary digital resources we will explore each non-fiction issue as a class while we are in distance learning. These materials will be an exciting addition to our daily literacy whole group lessons and guided reading groups.
New readers need exciting resources in their hands to apply emerging reading skills.
Each issue of Let’s Find Out magazine covers standards based topics including science, social studies, and social emotional learning. Instead of students simply staring at computer screens all day, they will be able to track print, find sight words, sound words out, and learn through their very own magazine. This grant will allow my students to begin to create a small library of just right reading materials at home.
