I work at a Title I School with fabulous, lovable, and curious children. Many of my students come from low-income households. Not all my families have technology, even though we live in Silicon Valley. As their teacher, my goal is to expose them to technology in the classroom. Currently, I only have 2 iPads that are designated to my classroom.
Even though some students come from less fortunate homes, they should still be given the opportunity to be able to learn how to use technology in the classroom.
My students have big hearts and are passionate learners! There was a assembly at our school about an animal on the brink of extinction, the vaquita. My students felt a deep compassion for this animal and during the donation drive brought in bags of coins from their piggy banks to help. I was amazed how much money my class donated! These wonderful students were very excited and wanted to learn more about the vaquita. They couldn't wait to get on an iPad so they could research more about this animal and print photos for their reports.
Currently I have 2 iPads in my classroom. Students really enjoy using them and are not afraid to explore various applications. Half the time students provide me with tips on how to navigate through the applications that we are learning.
The benefit of an additional iPad in our classroom is that more students will get the opportunity to learn how to use this form of technology.
It is wonderful how students can use this technology independently.
In our class, the additional iPad would be used to assist with research, used to read stories at their own level, learn new applications, and work on math problems.
Another wonderful benefit of an additional iPad is that students learn how to share and collaborate with a partner or even with their table group on classroom assignments.
I look forward to the technology use in my class this year. What better way to learn about various subjects, but through the use of iPads. It is amazing how quickly students learn how to collect data and images for their reports. I want them to feel capable and confident when they use technology in the classroom.
