Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in my Spanish Immersion kindergarten class learn Science through thematic instruction which integrates language math and literacy. But in order to fully develop these themes and offer students an experience rich in hands on activities and visuals students need an array of materials.
This will be our third year as a Spanish dual language school.
Currently we have students from Kindergarten until second grade in the the dual language program. We also have a regular middle school program that will eventually be fazed out as the dual immersion program reaches the middle school level. We are an inner city school in Oakland serving students from diverse backgrounds and needs. Students in my classroom are 50% English language and 50% Spanish language learners.
My Project
My philosophy on teaching Science has always lead me to teach hands-on lessons integrating with language and literacy. I believe that children will understand and be able to apply their learning of Science concepts through exploration, experiments, discovery, writing and reading. These resources such as; instance Science learning centers, sort and match Science games, a learn to recycle activity kit, Animal and insect realia will help foster this type of learning in my classroom. This grant will give us valuable materials that we need to support a Science program that is centered on how children learn best. It will also be key in teaching important Science concepts to students who are second language learners by using visuals and realia.
This project will inspire my students to think of themselves as "scientists" and realize how fascinating learning about Science can be!
These materials will be available for students to use for years to come!
