Help me give my students the Calm Zone! An iPad to guide instruction, a pipe & drape system to enclose it, and LED lights that allow the students to pick the lighting color to suit their mood.
My students attend an inner city middle school with high poverty. They have special needs which can be physical, social-emotional, developmental and sensory in nature. All of my students receive support guided by an individual educational plan.
We do our best at school to give our students opportunities to learn in the mainstream along the with support they need in a contained classroom.
Many of my students have differences in how well they can attend and focus to learn. They also have sensory differences in how they perceive the world which can make it challenging for them to stay calm and participate in learning, especially when given the demands in the mainstream. I have created sensory strategies to help students improve their self regulation.
My Project
The Calm Zone has been successfully used at a previous school site. I am anxious to get it back into action at my current school. The Calm Zone is a timed sequenced program guided by iPad instruction to use four pieces of equipment that first increase the heart rate, then slow it down and create calmness in those that participate. The program gathers data from each student experience to allow us to measure its benefit.
Success has been reported with the use of the Calm Zone, "It was amazing... it completely changed our student's day from one being filled with potential crises to one where the student was focused and ready to engage in learning.
This project will retrofit the Calm Zone into a classroom space where it will be used by our students to prepare them to learn and move from a place of upset or agitation. It can also be routinely used to help students prevent dysregulation.
