This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach visual art to the most amazing elementary-aged students. I have been at the same school for 21 years and I still love seeing the excitement in their eyes when they they enter my art room. Watching them explore art materials, use their imaginations, and discover their creativity is why I teach!
My Project
During this year's blended learning experience I would love to take my littlest artists outside (weather permitting!). They will create observational drawings of the city around them. They will learn to look closely, interpret the shapes they see and organize their compositions. The artists will be able to carry and set up these lightweight stools themselves and it will allow them to have a place to sit instead of on the concrete playground. Their comfort will allow their creativity to soar as they observe and create cityscapes, closeups of the school garden, or capture the action and activity of their Brooklyn neighborhood.
