Drawing is scary. Children often say, "I can't draw!" My students are going to the Los Angeles County Art Museum for eight field trips. I want them to take a sketchpad and draw what they see. Being surrounded by a variety of art will open their hearts and minds to draw what what is around them.
"I teach the 5th grade at a small elementary school in Los Angeles with approximately 400 students.
Our children come from all backgrounds, low income to middle income, and more than 13 languages are spoken at our school.
Our school is dedicated to including the arts in our day to day curriculum. Our children are encouraged to participate in all the arts. Our students have the opportunity to sing, dance, act, and create fine art. Our students benefit a great deal from having access to all the arts.
The school district has cut back a great deal on the arts. To continue our dedication to the arts we have turned to our parents and surrounding community for help.
My Project
The creative process reaches students in a variety of ways. Drawing helps children to expand their thinking and sparks their imagination. Our visits to the museum will give my students and opportunity to draw freely. They will have the opportunity to view and learn about different kinds of art. They can draw what they see in a personal and judgment free environment.
In addition, by having sketchbooks in their desks my students can use them on a routine basis. We will use the sketchbooks for directed drawing lessons, enhancing writing assignments, creating diagrams for science projects, as well as illustrations for social studies units.
The sketchbooks will be a record of their work.
My students will be able to see growth in their art work. We will be able to build upon the skills they are acquiring by using their sketchbooks on a regular basis.
Children learn in many ways. For those that say, "I can't draw," they will see that with practice and confidence they can draw. For my students who love to express themselves through drawing the sketchbooks and pencils will give them many opportunities to share their imagination.
