Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year is the second year that my students will have to take the Common Core Learning Standards aligned exam. Last year across the city, students' scores plummeted. This year my goal as a Social Studies Teacher is to prepare my students for the E.L.A. test, but in a fun and interesting way.
My students come from homes were their parents often cannot afford to replenish their supplies.
Often I have to provide pencils, crayons, colored pencils, sharpeners, markers and glue. I do not ask students for supplies, because I know that most of their parents can not afford to buy additional supplies.
My Project
At the present time I need colored pencils, glue sticks, and crayons. I do many arts and craft activities within social studies as a way to differentiate instruction and interest the children. However, I go from class to class and crayons and glue get consumed very quickly. At this point, I don't have enough crayons to last very long. I have absolutely no more glue left. I often have to borrow the classroom teacher's supplies. Often the classroom teachers do not have glue either. Therefore, I definitely need an ample supply of glue sticks and crayons. I also would like my students to have colored pencils. They need to have other coloring art supplies besides crayons. The reason I want Twistable colored pencils is that the regular colored pencils need to be sharpened constantly. This sharpening of colored pencils creates noise with the sharpener and takes away working time from the students doing an art project.
I always try to incorporate art into my Social Studies Curriculum.
In our school, we have no art or dance. The students need art to express their ideas and what they have learned. I find this especially effective with the English Language Learners and students that are more visual. I have used art when students create timelines about a particular topic or person's life. I have them draw at least two illustrations to match the timeline events that they have included in their timeline.
