Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We don't have a listening center! Technology is all around us but our listening center still has a tape player and most of our tapes are missing the book that goes with them. We want to listen to stories so we can become better storytellers but it's getting harder and harder!
I teach first grade ESL in a low-income neighborhood in NY.
My students come from a variety of language backgrounds and are at different levels of English acquisition. Regardless of the language they speak all children enjoy listening to stories. Having the opportunity to listen to a book be read to you does not only increase your listening comprehension but also your ability to then read that book on your own. Listening to a book on tape models the way words are pronounced as well as the way stories are told.
My Project
Having an updated listening center will give my students the opportunity to hear someone else read the story while they follow along in the book. It will give them the opportunity to read with a friend so they can have a discussion about a book even if they are not able to read it on their own. They will learn about storytelling voice so they can then practice that skill in their own books.
Having iPod shuffles in our listening center would really make a difference for my students.
The constant practice would help even the shyest of student with their public speaking skills. The listening center would be a place they would like to visit, not a place they want to avoid. Thank you so much for taking the time to consider our proposal!
