Help me give my students dramatic play items so that they can engage in active, imaginative play while receiving virtual pre-k instruction at home. Young children learn best through play, and this needs to continue at home!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have 20 curious, bright, energetic, and hilarious 4-year-old students in the special education inclusion program that I teach. Some of my students have been identified with a disability, and some are typically-developing. Consequently, there is a wide range of academic and social abilities in my class and everybody is learning at his or her individual level. My school serves almost exclusively low-income families and serves children in grades pre-k through eighth.
My challenge as a teacher of an inclusion program is to meet the needs of the wide range of abilities that I have in my class.
I provide my students' first school experience and set the tone for the rest of their educational careers. I work hard to help each child meet his/her individual potential.
My Project
This is a very difficult time for students, teachers, and families. My 4 year-old pre-k students are engaging in their first school experience and due to the pandemic, it will be over a computer at home. It is heartbreaking to think about all of the socialization and friendships that they will miss out on until we can safely return to school in-person. Children at this age need to be engaging in active play. Since I can't provide a meaningful play environment for my students in the classroom, I want to provide it for them in their homes!
This is a bigger project than I have ever requested because in order to make it work, I need materials for all 20 of my students!
These materials, however, will allow for me to provide instruction and guidance on how to engage in dramatic play at home. My students will be able to have a play center in their homes and engage with meaningful materials that build their language, imagination, cognitive, and social skills. With these materials, my students can play "restaurant" and cook and serve customers while they learn self-control and communication. They can learn empathy by taking care of their baby doll and sick patients with their doctor materials. And these are just a few possibilities! I don't want school for my young students to just be through a computer screen. These materials will stimulate their imaginations and provide the developmentally-appropriate concrete learning that helps them to thrive.
