Traveling the world is not an option for my students, so my classroom becomes the musical ticket for global exploration. This year I am taking my second graders to Australia and I want them to feel immersed in the musical culture.
My students are full of energy and they love music.
At my school, we have a very high percentage of our students on free and/or reduced lunch while also having a very high number of English as a second language students. However, these are not the descriptors that define our children. They are caring and thoughtful with a lot of strength. When it comes to trying new things, they are fearless. They are children with great potential.
My Project
Ultimately, we are preparing for a performance. My students will be using the pipes to create didgeridoos and then performing with them in our concert. During our classroom work, we will be exploring Australian culture, discussing sound production and vibrations, and, finally, using art to express our individuality.
This project will provide my students with an experience like none other.
The materials would never be attainable, otherwise, and I would be unable to give my kids this awesome chance to engage in a far away community's culture. To play "authentic" instruments is difficult enough; however, this project opens a window for my students to musically participate in a new craft.
