I teach a close group of students from a rural area in south central Kentucky. More than half the students are from low income families.
My students are an inspiration to me as a teacher.
They are a compassionate group. They never cease to amaze me by uplifting one another. They are eager to learn and face each challenge I give them with a growth mindset.
My students bring out the best in me. They make me want to do my best each day because I see greatness in them. They are our future! They deserve to be challenged and provided with activities that are engaging and be able to complete assignments with adequate supplies. To be able to do this they must be at school and in good health.
My Project
My students are involved in many fundraisers. One particular fundraiser they are currently involved in is raising money to attend the National Jr. Beta Convention. They compete in state and national competitions. The travel expenses alone are very expensive. This is a great opportunity to discuss financial aspect of the trip. Many do not understand what all goes into travel expenses such as hotel, gas, meals, taxes, and fees. This opens up a teaching opportunity that is real life. Students sell items at school during the day, as well as, participate in many after school activities to raise money to afford the travel expenses to these competitions. Many would not be able to participate otherwise.
One aspect of financial literacy is marketing .
A Cricut Air 2 Machine will allow students to create advertisements that would attract customers. Students will learn about color palettes, wording placement , and competitive pricing. Students not yet participating in the actual trip can still contribute to the team by helping with the advertisements. Students have to determine the total cost of the trip per person then decide how much to sell a product to earn a profit. Students then can decide what fundraisers are best for earning a profit. They must advertise their fundraiser in such a way that it catches the eye of potential customers.
Not only will it be used for this specific competition but the school continually raises money to afford items that students use daily such as computers or playground equipment. Students can get involved with the total cost and how much is need to obtain an item. Students can create advertisements, reminders, and goal trackers to show the student body what the goal is and how much is still needed.
