I am a Head Start preschool teacher in Clermont County, Ohio. I have 34 students between two classroom sessions that are 3-5 years old. My students all come from low income backgrounds.
When most of these kiddos enter my classroom they are experiencing a structured curriculum, classroom routine as well as being exposed to the social aspects of communicating with peers and teachers for the very first time.
I am providing the foundation for these children to begin their love of learning in my classroom. I want them to have the very best opportunities that I can provide to them. These first months of school are so critical in engaging their little minds and providing experiences to set them up for their future of learning!
My Project
With the following materials my students will be able to explore choice time with hands on materials and learn while playing at these two new centers! All of these materials will help my children in language, literacy and math as well as cooperating with their peers.
My Head Start program follows a specific curriculum that sees importance in mathematics and literacy.
Our curriculum introduces children to songs and stories that are easily retold with puppets. With a puppet theater they will now be able to retell stories, socially interact with each other and take turns while having fun at the same time! The theater I've chosen also has space to retell felt songs/stories that reoccur all throughout the year in our lesson plans. I've requested felt sets of stories and nursery rhymes that we sing and read about providing my students with hands on opportunities to act out and retell them.
Sand will provide my students with a new sensory experience and they will be able to "uncover" their own learning with the alphabet and number shells when they visit this center. We will also be able to use the number and alphabet bubbles as well as waterfalls in the water to enhance their water experience at the sensory table.
