My Students
I am a 55-year-old, brand-new, 3rd-grade teacher. It took me 11 years to earn my degree. What did I dream of, all along? To teach children who live in poverty.
More than 90 percent of my students live in families receiving public aid, live in substitute care, or are eligible for free or reduced-priced lunches.
Previously, I've taught low-income children at a summer literacy camp and as a guest teacher. I have an unquenchable passion to teach and to care for those most vulnerable in our society. They need me! And I learn from them, lessons of tenacity, resilience and love.
My Project
In order to hook children as life-long readers, we need to meet them where they are, with the best there is to offer. Finding only 10 books left by the previous teacher, I've been combing garage sales and Goodwill.
My project is to purchase engaging, award-winning novels, books about race cars, Blobfish and Ben Franklin, and even an ISpy book or two—a tantalizing selection of fiction and non-fiction pieces.
Students will have their own box, filled with a couple of books to enjoy during "Read to Self" time. These carefully chosen—and deliciously varied—jewels will be showcased on the three-tiered cardboard displays, allowing my students to shop... and wetting their appetites for more!
