My students are Spanish dual immersion students at a Title I school in the Portland area. Since kindergarten, my third graders have been learning to read and write in Spanish. Half of my students are native Spanish speakers, and the other half are Spanish language learners. I love watching them help one another learn. During our Spanish morning meeting they often turn to one another and whisper to figure out unknown words. They are kind, silly, and hard working.
My students love reading in Spanish and have made amazing growth in their reading this year in both languages.
My students always ask for more chapter books in Spanish in our classroom. The books in our school library are targeted at much younger readers, and my students want high interest books in Spanish. I've included multiple copies of a few of the books so that students can read their new books with partners.
Our school is participating in Oregon Battle of the Books and my students who can't purchase the books on their own need some copies in our classroom to check out.
Students carefully track their reading minutes at school, and the bookmark timers will increase their excitement about reading!
