My Project

For Black History month, my students will learn about a very famous African American scientist and inventor, George Washington Carver, that spent his life in the agricultural fields.

They will learn about Carver and the impact he made in agricultural science and how these connections helped the people and their land.

Carver spent much of his life studying about plants and working in gardens.

When he was a child, he was known as the "plant doctor." He had a secret garden where he grew all kinds of plants. People would ask him for advice when they had sick plants. Sometimes he'd take their plants to his garden and nurse them back to health. He spent his life studying hard and made so many accomplishments to making our world a better place. He was way ahead of his time.

My young students will love hearing his story and will be so excited grow some plants in the classroom, studying and drawing the process, just like Carver did. They will discover that light, water and proper care are needed when growing plants. They will use plant soil bricks, peat pots and seeds to grow their own sunflowers, planting them at home when they are large enough. They will understand firsthand, Carver's love of Mother Nature.

"Young people, I want to beg of you always keep your eyes open to what Mother Nature has to teach you. By so doing, you will learn many valuable things every day of your life." George Washington Carver
