Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you break into a sweat when you have to speak in front of a group? Is there a current issue you are passionate about? In room 206 there is no shrugging of the shoulders or mumbling, My students know that by the end of the year I expect them to confidently and clearly express themselves.
For my second language learners, which is the majority of the class, this can be an intimidating challenge.
For my gifted students, this is an opportunity to refine their skills to become effective presenters and debaters. The only way to improve communication skills is to practice, and the articles in Time For Kids gives us real world issues to discuss.
My Project
Time for Kids is a valuable tool in my classroom. These 8 pages lend themselves to a myriad of skills. The debate feature allows students to examine both sides of an issue, form an opinion backed up with evidence, and present their point of view verbally and in writing. The articles lend themselves to working on common-core non-fiction reading skills and provide the basis for great classroom discussions and follow-up projects.
I have used this magazine with great success for the last six years.
Since many of our families live below the poverty level, I am not comfortable asking for a donation to help pay the coast. My students look forward to receiving their new issue every week, and since many of them do not have books at home, I watch them carefully save each issue in their folders. Please help our room continue to love learning and be successful communicators!
