Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are beautiful third grade learners who bring a smile to my face every day! They are energetic, curious, creative, and eager to learn. I work at a diverse Title I elementary school where the majority of my students come from poverty. I encourage young learners to focus on their possibilities and not their challenging situations.
I encourage my students to dream of their futures by greeting them daily with titles such as "Good morning future doctors, lawyers, teachers, policemen, scientists, artists, and engineers!"
My students are hard workers and are motivated to improve themselves as learners. When they learn that others believe in them, it encourages them to try even harder!
My Project
I hope to include in my science lessons opportunities for students to represent their thinking and learning through drawing and labeling. Scientific drawings represent a model of a real object or even an idea that both scientists and engineers rely heavily upon. Students will use sketchbooks to demonstrate their learning by drawing their scientific observations, showing processes, and recording their findings. In addition, they will record the scientific processes by using transitional words such as next, then, first, finally, etc.
With the Next Generation Science Standards mingling with engineering, it’s critical that we bring in scientific drawings!
We will incorporate scientific drawing into our science lessons so students collect, process, and understand information better. Drawing requires students to use metacognitive thinking skills such as when analyzing an object, evaluating which parts to include, deciding where to place elements, or making judgments about the size, color, and shape. These scientific sketchpads/notebooks will be used throughout the entire year to record learning.
I am so thankful for the If/Then collection and their matching donations to this project! I would use the collection to introduce students to real scientists and expose them to various STEM careers to reinforce the scientific method.
