Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a very diverse Title I school, in the inner city, which serves students in grades PreK-5 and provides rigorous academics and a safe learning environment. All children receive free breakfast and lunch due to this neighborhood's socioeconomic status. They come from a wonderful mix of ethnic and economic backgrounds, and despite any challenges that my students may face, they come to school daily, prepared to do their best.
Each morning, my students actively come into our classroom eager and excited to start a new day of learning.
They walk into the classroom bursting with energy, creativity and full of life. My students truly inspire me with their passion and an insatiable love for learning.
My Project
This year, my school introduced Code Week. It was a week that aimed at bringing coding and digital literacy to everyone in a fun and engaging way. It was new to both myself and my students and it opened the door to introducing coding to my first-grade students. It was not a very enjoyable week because I felt as lost as my students. Enter OSMO! The Osmo Genius starter kit, along with the Osmo coding games, will introduce my first graders to programming in a fun, and kid-friendly way. It will bring a hands-on digital learning tool that ignites curiosity, enables discovery, and fosters collaboration across a variety of subjects through music and play.
The Osmo games will allow my students to use coding blocks to help them develop early coding skills in a fun and innovative way!
We will use Osmo during small group learning centers, which I know will keep them engaged the entire time! They can play word games, practice coding, and work on math skills, such as number recognition, adding, and subtracting. Please help me to bring coding to life in my first-grade classroom.
