"Could you see if you can find this book for me?" I'll never forget the day that one of my students, who swore the first day I met her that she hated reading and would never enjoy it, started making book requests when she heard I was going to a used book store. Or another student, who told a friend, "Read this. It will take you on a journey you can't possibly imagine!"
This is why I do what I do.
I want to show my students that learning isn't just something you do at school. It's something that gives you the key to a door that opens to a whole new world ready for you to explore. Students enter worlds they never knew existed and understand concepts they never dreamed to imagine.
My students are a group of wild, independent, and vastly different people that, without realizing it, end up teaching me more than I could ever teach them.
My Project
My students need high interest, gripping stories to hook them into reading and show how reading can be as fun as climbing mountains. We are requesting books in this series by Gordon Korman which take students all the way to Mt. Everest! Next year I will teach a group of Fourth grade gifted and talented students. These students do not need help with how to read, but with how to love reading! I know if I can get them hooked into a series, that I'll have them hooked into reading.
Students will fall in love with this series starting with the prologue, where they find out someone doesn't make it off the mountain!
Students will beg to read this book and look forward to literature circles during class. What teacher doesn't want her students begging to read?
With your help, we can show these kids how reading is just as fun as climbing mountains!
