They truly enjoy capturing the beauty and spirit of their island home through photography.
They put so much effort and heart into producing a stunning, high-quality yearbook. Producing this book is a year-long project, which they complete with enthusiasm and love, often coming in own their own time; during lunch, after school and even on the weekends. My students' desire to learn and improve fuels me to continue to be the best educator I can be.
My Project
I teach on Hawaii Island. You have most likely heard on the news about the continual eruption of Kilauea. The volcano continues to erupt and scientists see not end in sight. I teach on the west side of the island. While we are safe from the lava flow our town suffers from a side effect of the volcanic eruption....VOG! What is VOG? When sulphur dioxide and other gases and particles are emitted by an erupting volcano that react with oxygen and moisture in the presence of sunlight this forms volcanic smog. Due the tradewinds the VOG has blown over to our town covering our city in a thick haze. There are many days when you cannot look out and see the ocean or the mountains. We have grown accustomed to checking the air quality index. In the past few months I've never seen our air at "green" or healthy. Most days our air is listed as "yellow", "orange," and there have been days when it is "red" (unhealthy).
Many people, including my students, suffer from side effects of VOG.
Headaches, watery eyes, sore throat, breathing difficulties (including inducing asthma attacks), flu-like symptoms, and general lethargy are commonly reported.
As you can imagine, breathing this air makes it an uncomfortable learning environment. I am requesting an AirMedic Pro 5 Ultra VOG air purifier. This is an extra strong air purifying unit designed specifically to adsorb the dangerous chemicals, gases and toxic particles emitted from VOG. In addition, I am requesting several Vornado fans that work to circulate the air in the room in a spiral-like motion, ensuring that all students will be able to breathe clean, cool air.
Please consider donating to my classroom to help ensure my students have the healthy air they deserve.
