My Students

When you think of school, you think of learning. But for my students, school is more than just for learning. It is a safe haven and a place where they can escape the harsh realities from home.

My 12 and 13 year-old students are more than young teenagers.

At home, they are caregivers to siblings, and cooks, and they often play an adult role. They come to school to escape the crimes, drugs, and secondary trauma all around them.

Given this, my desire is to create a classroom environment where all students can feel safe, respected, and valued. I know that our school is located in one of the toughest areas. The neighborhoods aren't safe; they are filled with drugs, gangs, and violence.

However, students show up every day ready to learn because they want to change the trajectory of their future. They want to end the generational curse. I want to be there alongside my students, helping them achieve their goals. I want to provide a haven for my students where they can forget about the chaos around them, even if for just a little while. Together, we can remove barriers and help lift our community!

My Project

My students are attending school in-person, and have been since August. Last school year, when we attended hybrid, we were having a difficult time with staying connected because they did not bring their laptop chargers to school with them.

As a result, we had to scramble and borrow chargers from other students to make things work.

This is not the ideal situation as we are trying to limit cross-contamination and prevent contact with others beyond our cohort in Room 14.

I am trying to anticipate that more students will have the same issue. Having a class set of laptop chargers will allow me to safely provide chargers to students without having to be expose or expose others to different students and classrooms.

We have to keep students learning, but we must do it safely. Yes, students are in-person, but we are also taking measure to provide a blended learning environment where students will need access to their laptops daily. Their laptops need to stay charged all throughout the day, and if they do not have a charger, they will miss out on valuable lessons and instruction.

Your help means that kids can stay connected, and not have to worry about their chargers being at home
