Students learn best by DOING, rather than by reading or taking lecture notes. Science is exciting. I hope to ignite a passion for science in my students by providing them with hands on labs on the cell cycle.
I have students from a wide variety of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Many of our students are taking college prep classes, but there are also those students who truly struggle with academics. Currently, I'm most concerned with our at risk populations. The achievement gap continues to grow. In my subject area of science, I am able to provide students with experiences they can relate to. The labs help them make connections between the content they need to learn.
My Project
Cells are the basic unit and function of life. I'm requesting a cell size and diffusion lab in which students will see how it is more effective for cells to be small. Next, I'm requesting a cell communication lab. Students will see how yeast cells use pheromones as a means of communication. This lab also helps students practice their microscope skills. Students will also engage in a culminating activity, the fetal pig dissection. I love the fetal pig dissection because it allow students to truly bring a whole years worth of learning together. The fetal pig is also similar to our own body plan, so students really enjoy getting to see the intricacies of the body.
We are at a crossroads in education.
It is SO important to invest in our students, because they are our future doctors, lawyers, accountants, engineers, etc. I aim to provide a solid biology foundation for my students so if they wish to pursue the sciences in college, they can. If not, they leave my class having a better understanding of their body and the world around them.
