My students need a Teaching Diversity and Tolerance kit and art materials to see what people, places and food are like in other areas of the world. They need positive exposure to the fact that we are not all the same and that's ok!
I teach in a small, rural school with the student population less than 450 for all of K-12. We have a very high percentage of families who qualify for free and reduced price lunch, which also qualifies us school wide for Title I. The one thing that our school is lacking is diversity. I want my kindergarten kids to see that our world is made up of amazing people with a variety of differences and similarities and all can and should be celebrated!
My Project
My students do not have much, if any exposure to diversity in their school surroundings. With so many fun activities in mind, I would like to help students see that the world is made up of many different kinds of people who make our world a better place. I want the students to have a chance to learn about different families, foods, and places at a very young age so that we can see how cool it is to learn about how special everyone really is. Donations to this grant would help our projects and play centers to include various materials such as real life pictures from the View Finders of people from all over the world along with different foods they prepare and holidays or events that are celebrated. Various art supplies will allow children to have more choices for skin colors and materials in the kit would help guide me to accurately teach students information and for us to explore and share our new knowledge from readings and projects. I do have some books and fun project ideas already but materials requested would help us do more.
