Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 18 five year olds in a Title One school. 89% of our school population receives free and reduced lunch. We are a high-need community in a very special school. Despite all of our challenges we step up to the plate every year and provide nothing but the best for our students.
Budget cuts have been devastating and we can not rely on our families to help with supplemental materials.
Many of my students parents work multiple jobs and simply don't have the time to work with their children at home. As a result when many of my students enter Kindergarten they cannot name any of the letters of the alphabet, let alone start to build CVC words. I have taught Preschool and Kindergarten and I know the importance of knowing the letters and sounds of the alphabet. Many students that enter Kindergarten without this basic skill are typically held back. My students need to learn how to combine letter sounds into CVC words. Knowledge of the alphabet and phonemic awareness are the corner stones for pre-reading. Without a solid foundation these children will struggle with reading throughout their school years.
My Project
My students need one CVC Word Work Center, Word Building Blocks and Work Building Magnetic Lapboards for our small group workshops. I will create learning centers for individuals and small groups that support learning phonics and letter recognition. These activities will also serve as extensions and enhancements to our whole classroom lessons.
With these materials you can help my students become word builders.
It is a basic skill that requires a lot of patience and a variety of materials to achieve. Once they know their letter sounds I can begin to work teaching them how to put it all together. A skill that will put them ahead of other incoming kindergarten students that have not had the benefit of being in my classroom. You can help put my students ahead of the game!
