Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class consists of a diverse group of learners. My classroom has 26-second grade students with varying abilities. The socioeconomic background of our students is more than 95% free/reduced lunch. I teach in an urban inner-city school rich with diverse cultures from all over the world. Most of my students need additional learning materials to meet grade-level expectations. Our school saying is Better today than yesterday! Better tomorrow than today! I want to make their tomorrow better!
My Project
My second graders love to learn new things! I enjoy introducing them to new endeavors. Second graders enjoy being challenged.
Being able to use Young Architects Designer Blocks, and the Blocks & Blueprints Learning Centers will help my students be able to learn how to construct buildings, bridges, platforms, towers, and other structures.
Students will design their own blueprints using the Blocks & Blueprints Learning Centers and then work to test out their construction using the Young Architects Designer Blocks Sets.
Students will work in teams to complete a bridge design and then have testing rounds to see which bridge is the strongest by placing items one by one on the bridge until it collapses! Students will construct written responses as to which bridge was the strongest after the testing round. They can also make changes to their bridge design and retest them to see if they are stronger.
Students will continue this model to test out platforms, towers, and other structures. Allowing students to design blueprints and build structures at this young age will hopefully spark their interest to become an Architect or Engineer in their future career path.
My students would love to have these STEM architectural and engineering kits to be able to explore structure and design while building towers, buildings, platforms and bridges. I would love to introduce STEM learning in my inner city classroom so my students can be exposed to STEM early on and be able to add to their learning as they go through elementary school. Having these STEM kits would be an excellent addition to our second grade classroom.
