My Students

My special education preschool is an energetic group of students, with mixed interests and goals. A few of my students are learning how to interact with peers and play cooperatively; while some are learning fine motor skills like manipulating objects. In this class, we also build language skills that will be the foundation for their future. Together they are learning appropriate skills in interacting with peers. My students pull each other to various activities, and as their language develops, verbally invite peers to interact or see what they have created. Most of their social and verbal interactions take place in the dramatic play and block areas. These areas depict real-world environments like doctor's offices, zoos, house kitchens, and museums. One student in the dramatic play area pointed to a student's arm and said, "ow." He then ran away, got a cotton ball, put hand sanitizer on it, and said, "I'll fix it, at the doctors." Another peer saw what he did and ran up and said, "I hurt here!"

My Project

The blocks, bricks, and rock block set will help my students continue their social-emotional learning as students interact with each other by verbal and non-verbal communication to ask for blocks and work together to accomplish a common goal of building a structure. The farmers market/puppet building will have a place in the reading area and dramatic play area. The marketplace creates a space where students will gather together to converse, practice interacting with materials, and peers. The market/puppet show center will also increase students' literacy as they practice recognizing and writing letters and numbers. Timers will be used to help students define social interactions as they physically see when their time is up when sharing materials throughout the classroom.
