Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in South Los Angeles. The vast majority of our students are Latino/Hispanic and low-income. While only an estimated 25% of their parents have a high school degree, our students dream big and nearly all of them attend college after graduation.
Unfortunately, many of our students lack access to technology in their own homes.
Because our school is becoming more technology-based, this poses a formidable challenge for our students. Students without computers find it difficult for themselves to complete homework, work on college applications, and apply for summer programs and internships.
My Project
Studies show that low-income students are less likely to have access to the productivity tools that are needed for success in academic and career settings. Each of our students' classes makes use of Google Classroom and Google Applications for Education.
Without reliable access to computers, many of our students are finding that they are likely to fall behind in their classes.
While our school does currently have a laptop lending program, the computers we have are in high demand and many are approaching the end of their life cycle.
On a daily basis, I have to turn away students who are left to wonder how they'll complete their essays or make progress on college applications. Many students try to complete work on their cell phones, only to find that these items are not ideal tools for productivity.
Together, we can help bridge the digital divide and give students the tools they'll need to succeed in the 21st century.
