My students are diverse in their academic ability, curious about their future, and excited about their futures. While some are strong readers, others struggle with grade-level comprehension.
Many of my students are a part of a military family because my school is nestled between several military bases.
Because of the wide learning abilities of my students, I have found that they thrive when working in small groups, so I try to incorporate and build on their skills through peer-modeling and teacher scaffolding, especially when reading grade-level texts.
Working in small groups, and eventually, whole class reading reinforcement, my students build on the skills and confidence they will need for their future as lifelong learners.
The kit is designed as a multi-layer puzzle, and what my students will see when they walk into our Breakout classroom is a large box for each group with a hasp that has four different locks on it: a word lock, a number lock, a directional lock, and a key lock. Students will be working with a text that we have read and will figure out text-dependent clues in their small groups. These clues will then lead them to a place that has another clue written in invisible ink. They will use the UV light to see that clue. They will use that clue to find another puzzle piece obtained from Breakout EDU information on the flash drive. That answer will help them solve the needed word for the word lock. These critical-thinking and problem-solving clues will lead them to information needed to open the other three locks as well as the small box, while working cooperatively and thinking critically to solve these puzzles about our text.
The supplies for a Breakout EDU kit will develop the key components of a future-ready student: critical thinking, collaboration, and complex problem solving.
My students thrive on hands-on activities and collaborative learning. They thirst for challenging activities that allow them to use their creativity, and with Breakout EDU, I can access multiple games to use these kits over and over for any classes that I have. I hope you will fund this project that my students desperately want and need.
