Kindergartners today are learning in different ways than they used to. Technology is now instrumental in helping children gain skills in all academic areas. Bee Bot robots introduce children to how coding works in a fun, hands on way. Bee Bots also introduce the concept of robotics.
My students are enthusiastic, curious, and engaged.
They are hands-on learners. Some of my students speak another language at home, and several qualify for special education modifications. Our school is a brand new school (only grades K and 1st currently) that is still building its curriculum and materials. We are a STEAM school, meaning we explore various scientific concepts through hands-on, integrated projects. My kindergartners are fully immersed in a scientific concept and topic throughout the school day. An important part of their learning is through hands-on explorations and technology. By giving them Bee Bots, introductory coding cards, and coding mats, they can begin to develop a fluency with programming and robotics. They will continue to build on these skills each grade they pass through at our school. This will build a solid foundation for their future learning.
My Project
Students will use these Bee Bots in small structured learning groups with the teacher, small cooperative groups with peers, and independently during the school day. Students will take the skills they learn in the teacher led group and practice them during STEAM time and independent choice time. As students acquire skills, new skills will be taught in the small group and then practiced. Then students will have the opportunity to teach their peers new skills they discover.
Students will also have the opportunity to write their own Bee Bot programs for their peers to try. This will expose them to the beginning of writing code!
This hands on technology is age appropriate and the perfect first step in programming!
These Bee Bots will provide many opportunities for 21st century learning to occur in my classroom!
The children will have access to them throughout the school day, as well as have direct instruction in coding and programming. They will work together on teams which builds important cooperative learning and coping skills. They will also work independently and on Bee Bot challenges to be able to develop their own skills. The learning opportunities are endless!
