Let's Be Friends! Introducing Early Learners to Rich Literacy Experiences
Help me give my students authentic literature experiences as we build vocabulary, oral language, phonemic awareness, comprehension, and phonics skills. These titles and organizational supplies will support intentional instruction to build these skills and foster success.
My students are a diverse group of transitional kindergarteners who came to school with limited school-ready skills, including limited early literacy experiences. Over 85% of my students have a Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plan to target missing literacy skills and to minimize their at-risk academic status. Additionally, about 1/4 of my students also have targeted intervention assistance plans specific to literacy skills.
Most of my students are discovering academic and social experiences for the very first time.
The growth in these areas has been exponential and amazing to witness! We are using a hands-on approach to develop a deeper understanding of literacy and math skills, using authentic literature intentionally paired with nonfiction texts, to prepare them for traditional kindergarten and successful school careers.
My Project
Most of my transitional kindergarten students come to school with VERY limited literacy experiences. This project is aimed to introduce these children to rich, authentic experiences with authentic literature, paired with a nonfiction text selection, to foster a lifelong appreciation with them.
These intentional selections are chosen to not only provide strong language experiences but also to provide real world connections and content knowledge.
These titles are aligned with the KinderLiteracy program, which gets kids talking about books, makes real-life connections, promotes life skills, and builds vocabulary. It is my hope that these experiences will not only be the first steps in bridging the gap but also the foundation for academic success and engagement.
