The students in our school community are in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. Our school has established a positive learning environment for a diverse population of students. Besides learning the common core standards, our students learn important life lessons about acceptance, kindness, and friendship.
Engagement in social and academic activities is vital for student growth, but some students are struggling to stay engaged.
The students who would benefit from this project include students who are participating in co-taught classrooms. There is one classroom in each grade level that is co-taught by a general education teacher and a special education teacher. These classrooms include a mixture of general education students and students who have special needs. This inclusion program has been very successful for all types of learners.
My Project
For some students, it is a LONG school day and let's face it... kids get antsy! Keeping students engaged is my top priority as a teacher. Many students are struggling throughout the day to keep focus and stay on task.
Research has demonstrated that alternative seating helps to increase student engagement by providing movement.
Having flexible seating options and fidgets help the students to sustain attention longer and focus on their work more diligently. Increasing student engagement allows the learners to better retain information and make progress in their academics.
The stools and the variety of seating solutions will help students to regulate themselves to engage in the academic and social activities throughout the school day!
