Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I need to teach my fifth graders about human rights that hold true for all people. I need small group reading books to help my students understand this important theme.

I teach in an urban school in upstate New York.

All of my students receive a free or reduced lunch. The only thing that my students know about the civil rights movement or any rights movement is Martin Luther's march and speech. They have a small view of the challenges that people face.

My Project

I want to broaden that view. I want to teach them about the plight of many races. My students need the knowledge that non-fiction text can bring to them. I would like to teach them about several different peoples who have faced oppression, including woman. After reading about these different historic events, my students will have more empathy for others. They can learn about prejudice from history and hopefully clear the path of prejudice for future generations. We need to learn acceptance of each other. I would like to have my students respond to the text by making a self image. I have ordered craft material to make small images of ourselves. Along with our images, we can write about our cultural heritage and be proud of our diverse backgrounds.

The Common Core is pushing our students to read rigorous text and think critically.

You can help them to delve into the theme of equity while improving their reading skills and their understanding of other cultures. Thank you for considering my project.
