Help me give my students books and resources to positively impact our classroom environment by promoting social and emotional learning, understanding feelings and Kindness.
I am blessed to teach second grade at a wonderful Title I school in northeast North Carolina. Our students are loving, hard-working, easily motivated, and care about each other and their success! They thrive on competitions and reaching goals set for them throughout the school year.
Our students get excited, work harder, and stay more engaged when they are given options and choices which makes them feel valued and that their interests matter!
We are a diverse school consisting of students and families from various backgrounds and cultures as well as Coast Guard families. They are each unique and have a special way of winning our hearts with their kindness and thoughtfulness. The students and staff at our elementary school have truly become a family to one another!
My Project
The requested materials included in this project of read aloud books pertaining to the subjects of feelings, emotions, kindness, empathy, compassion, the colorful bracelets, and the teacher morning meeting resource book will help to teach my incoming second graders ways to handle their own feelings and emotions while also teaching them ways to "Try and be a rainbow in someones cloud" as Maya Angelou quoted.
Will we begin each day with a class morning meeting where students will start their day reflecting, encouraging and setting goals to show others kindness and to be productive and successful.
Our two class mottos for the new school year will be "Celebrate What You Want to See More Of" (Tom Peters) and to "Try to be a Rainbow in Someones Cloud" (Maya Angelou). These wonderful resources will help me to better assist and teach my 2nd graders effective strategies on dealing with their emotions, feelings, and showing kindness, empathy and compassion to their classmates, families and communities. The colorful bracelets will be used as a quick daily check in with my students on how they are feeling each day. Each color represents a different feeling. (Red- anger, green-calm, yellow-happy, pink-full of love, blue-sad, Black- fear)
