Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Recently, newly arrived students from Puerto Rico enrolled in my class. They are from low-income households, and are receiving free meals at schools. They have encountered many challenges and obstacles, especially havoc from Hurricane Maria. As other special needs students, they are curious and inquisitive.

Newly enrolled English Language Learners have special needs, they are from a low-income household, lack basic English skills, as well as, access to technology.

Daily I encourage, and support my students, to put forth their best effort, and stay motivated, so they may become productive, educated adults.

Since Hurricane Maria we have seen an increase number of students who fled Puerto Rico enroll at our school. These displaced students lack basic English Communication Skills and don't have access to technology.

My Project

For newly enrolled students from Puerto Rico attending a new school is extremely challenging, especially with limited basic English communication skills. Apple iPads are friendly to use and easy to navigate. With this new addition to my classroom, my students will reinforce various academic skills by playing games and having fun. My students will reinforce Civics skills by accessing educational games on www.iCivics.org, PBS LearningMedia, Branches of Power, as well as accessing on-line textbooks. This new device will be motivating for my students. Upon completion of various differentiated tasks, and systematic rotation, students will be given an opportunity to play various educational games and have fun learning.

The Apple iPad device and the vast number of apps available, will bridge the gap that exists for my students in the way they access their learning.

My goal is to provide a fun, interactive way of learning for my newly arrived students. With the vast number of apps available, students will use images, videos, audio, dictionaries, translators, and text to reinforce Civics Standards and enable them to prepare for the upcoming state assessment (EOC). An iPad will help bridge the learning gaps by giving students alternative options for accessing their curriculum. The keyboard case will keep the iPad safe from damage while providing the comfort of a traditional keyboard. The earphone will assist students with blocking distractions and remaining focused. This will also provide students an opportunity to work in small cooperative groups while being engaged in learning. With future projects I hope to acquire a classroom set, which will allow all students equal time in accessing new technology and reinforce classroom academic skills.
