Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach amazing 8th graders in an amazing middle school that is breaking the myths and raising the rigor in a very high needs area. We have earned many distinctions in the past few years and yet we have been given very little budget help. The California budget crisis is hurting us in all areas of our teaching. We have a strong focus on our English Learners and are looking for ways to incorporate additional visuals to all parts of the lessons.
After 3 years of teaching science I am thrilled to switch over to US History. When I gave my students a blank map of the United States, 90% of them could not name more than California and Texas! As a Geography fanatic, I was sorely depressed.
So, with my focus on providing visuals and my students lack of Geography knowledge the natural next step is MAPS. Let's get a big one for the classroom and laminated maps that students can use in groups of 2-3. This way they are learning cooperatively, getting hands on experience with Geography, and are able to follow western expansion instead of simply reading about it.
I am so excited to think of all the ways to incorporate maps into my teaching this school year. I strongly hope that you will help me in this effort and empower my students to take charge of their education by interacting with history instead of simply reading about it. Thank you in advance for your support!
