This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have been working with my Title 1 students that are in the 100% free lunch program in the city of Rochester, NY for over 23 years. We have amazing students, who are talented, smart, kind and curious that have created amazing artworks in previous years. Sadly, not only is our district going through a HUGE budget crisis that has cut many teachers, but with all of the complications of COVID this year, have left much uncertainty concerning individual art supplies that students can safely use on their own.
MANY of my students don't have access to art supplies that are their own and had a hard time completing 2-D assignments while we went to learning online this past year.
I would often get assignment turned in with a note, "I'm sorry all I had was this lined paper and this worn out marker" or I had to turn to other types of assignments or activities. I wish they had more to work with at home or if we go back to have an individual bag to keep art supplies safe and clean so we can start right off and create! Either way, we hope to CREATE!
My Project
Please help my students actually get their hands on some basic art supplies as we navigate remote and/or hybrid learning this school year.
Instead of color sheets that are copied and colored in or giving assignments that were hit or miss if a child had supplies to actually complete properly, I would like to help our students have access to simple supplies that we found many homes did not have on hand.
My hope is to keep students engaged, to continue being problem solvers while making use of the right side of their brain as they continue to go through this pandemic. I am looking to put together individual kits that each child can have at home or in a special place in their classroom so that they can get back to being creative and complete their art assignments with ease!
