Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In our classroom, we do work on the carpet everyday. We now sit on two worn rugs thrown together to make a space large enough for all students to fit. I teach third grade in a low socio-economic school. The kids love to work together on the floor but we have been talking about a nice new rug that we could learn from and sit on. A few of the other classes have received carpets that are similar from grants and my students dream about one in our room. This particular carpet, Maps That Teach, teaches us things that are in line with the third grade California content standards for the social sciences/geography. Being able to stand on the carpet with the compass rose will enhance the learning experience of directions and give the students some thing they truly deserve--a vivid learning experience.
We were practicing our "how to write a paragraph" skills last week. The topic to write about was "what things we would do and change if we were the mayor of East Palo Alto." One student wrote that one of the things he would do as mayor would be to "give our class the money to buy the rug that shows us the world." I would love to be able to present this rug to my wonderful students who would truly appreciate it! This carpet will benefit not only my students this year but students for many years as they sit on top of the world on their very own magic carpet!
