Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) teacher in a 1st grade co-teach classroom with 21 students. Our students are an energetic bunch who are eager to learn, but either have an Individualized Education Plan or are in MTSS/RTI and need extra help to make gains in academics and stay proficient. Our class serves students with a range of disabilities from ASD, ADHD to social-emotional ones.
Our school is Title I and that means 100% of our students come from low-income families that receive free or reduced price lunch.
Our kids don't let that determine who they are. As we all know testing is part of their school lives. It's necessary to help monitor what they students are learning and what they are struggling with. In addition, it helps guide the teacher's instruction. Our students take their district assessments for reading and math on Chrome books. We are in need of headphones so they are not distracted by their classmates as they try their best.
My Project
Our students take quarterly district ELA and Math assessments on Chrome books. They also take AR tests on the Chrome books and since we have lower ability readers, they are able to listen to the questions and answer choices being read out loud. Imagine being in a room of twenty one kids and half the class is listening to a bunch of different questions being read out loud. It's distracting, loud, and affects how well the students do on the tests they take. We also have a daily ELA and Math small group rotation. Again having five or six different laptops going on while the others are in their small groups is distracting.
The use of headphones enables students to concentrate on their own assignments without having to listen to others.
It enables them to concentrate more and that will have a positive effect on their scores and learning.
