Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you walk into my classroom, you will see my students working in pairs, in small groups and there is definitely a buzz. You will see students working on Chromebooks, iPad minis, and even personal smartphones. My students are used to using many different modalities to demonstrate their understanding. More than half of the students in our school come from low-income homes.
My students are a group of seventh and eighth graders who are English-language learners and Spanish-language learners.
They have been learning in both languages since kindergarten in our school, which is a K-8 grade school model.
My Project
My students need to engage in the engineering design process. The Outbreak Alert: Engineering a Pandemic Response kit will help my students solve problems systematically while engaging in hands-on activities.
In our district we celebrate STEM Week, my hope is to grab my students' attention through the activities that will last longer than a week.
I am convinced that when my students are given the opportunity they will thrive. In my classroom, I have artists, singers, comedians, scientists, mathematicians, journalists, teachers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, administrators, car mechanics, technicians, electricians, sportsmen and women, newscasters, architects, engineers, and dancers. We have human beings with many types of intelligence: nature smart, sound smart, number/reasoning smart, life smart, people smart, body smart and word smart. All in your own way are smart.
They are eager to get the chance to show how smart they are despite their social-economic status.
