My school is the best school in the state of Louisiana and the students are very smart and hard-working individuals. They are academically gifted, but very kind and active in extra-curricular activities.
It may be counter intuitive, but my students come from a huge variety of backgrounds, socio-economically and ethnically.
It is typical to see kids whose families could not be more different be best friends. It is heart-warming to see Ronnie with Ben interacting when most probably, they would not meet in the same circles in a million years.
I am involved with the Student Council, a wonderful group of individuals who are dedicated to making the world a better place, one school at a time. I also sponsor the senior class, every year and organize many fun activities with them, such as the "Senior Barbecue", or fundraising events (food banks, gloves and socks for the homeless etc.).
Being a teacher at my school is very rewarding and my students make me feel that I am in the right place, at the right time.
My Project
Every year, we celebrate the birthday of the nation's Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin, after whom our school is named. Parents are invited, and of course, all students and staff.
It is the responsibility of the Student Council to put the event together, order cakes, make coffee, prepare and set up the tables, tablecloths, serving utensils, plates and cups.
Our school serves almost 1000 students and many parents attend Benjamin's birthday party, so it is a huge undertaking that requires lots of preparation.
The students members of the council meet a couple of months in advance to organize the event and splits the different tasks. Some will take care of sending invitations, some will be in charge of the cake, from ordering to cutting, some will be in charge of setting up the tables in the foyer, while some will be in charge of the coffee.
Others will get balloons or take pictures of the event. There are many tasks to accomplish and coordination is essential.
This year, the set up of the event was not as smooth as expected because we were missing a few items that would have made things easier: for example, carts to transport the cakes to the foyer and serving utensils.
The student council members just gain valuable real-life skills by organizing Ben's Birthday. They will have another opportunity to repeat the experience in a few months, when we host the ring ceremony for juniors.
Thank you very much for facilitating the task for our student organizers!
