I get to teach life sciences to every single seventh-grader in my school every day. They come into my room with little background knowledge of many of the topics I teach (cells, DNA, heredity, genetics, history of life on earth, fossils, animal adaptations, hydroponic gardening, and more).
My students are also in the middle of the greatest changes their bodies they will ever experience.
So...the challenge I have is to somehow make life sciences interesting to them, keep them engaged, motivate them each and every day despite all of the other 'things' going on in their lives. It is a challenge that invigorates me each year.
I am attempting to build a classroom full of equipment that will lead to investigation and exploration outside of the confines of a textbook. I appreciate any financial support you are willing to offer to help my students succeed this year!
My Project
I recently installed an 8ft by 4ft hydroponic garden in my classroom to provide my students with a multitude of hands-on opportunities to not just grow plants, but also create endless experiments all year long.
We are in need of more artificial lighting to provide the best possible outcomes when growing our plants.
These lights are top-of-the-line, full-spectrum, LED, low-energy growth lights. They will provide plenty of light for our lettuce, peas, tomatoes, or whatever else we decide to grow all throughout the year. In addition, these bulbs will last an estimated 20,000 hours, which at 14 hours per day for 10 months each year, will last until the year 2028!
